This course is designed for candidates who want to train to become independent autonomous practitioners.  Successful completion of this course means that you will be able to work as an independent professional counselling practitioner.   The CPCAB Diploma has achieved recognition from the Open University and this course counts as 30 credits towards a foundation degree in counselling.

Units of Study

  • Work safely, legally and ethically as a counsellor
  • Work with complex aspects of the counselling relationship

  • Use a coherent approach to respond to the needs of the individual clients
  • Work with self-awareness as an independent practitioner
  • Use theory, research and skills within a coherent framework for independent counselling practice
  • Monitor and maintain professional effectiveness as a counsellor in independent practice

Assessment

Assessment will be both external and internal.

You will be required to write a 3000-3500 word structured case review, which will be externally assessed.

Complete 60 hours minimum of one-to-one, formally contracted counselling as practitioner; exercising autonomy in your role as counsellor and carry the responsibility for assessment.  This could be as a senior practitioner in an agency/organisation or working as a private practitioner working for an external organisation, a counsellor working for an Employee Assistance Programme or a counsellor in private practice.   You will also be required to complete 20 hours of personal counselling therapy.

You will be expected to build a portfolio.  The three assessment methods used throughout the training are Review of  Documents, Tutor Observation, Testimony and meeting course criteria.  You will also be expected to include a review of a 15-minute transcript of clinical work.

Entry Requirement

Minimum age of entry 19 years.

Hold a CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or Recognised Prior Learning (RPL).

You must have completed at least 40 hours of personal therapy.

You will be asked to attend an interview, where your readiness to progress to independent practitioner status will be discussed.

You will need to provide two references from your most recent tutor and your clinical supervisor.

Additional Costs

Personal therapy 20 hours with a BACP Registered Counsellor/Psychotherapist, working from a Humanistic orientation, with a minimum 450 client hours.

Supervision costs.

Membership of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Accreditation

This is a Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) course, which is accredited by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) into the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Qualification number: 500/8386/7.

Progression Route

On successful completion of the Diploma and  following further experience as a counselling practitioner, you may progress to Level 6 Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision, (TCSU-L6), Qualification number 500/8222/X.
