This course is designed for candidates who want to train to become independent counsellors working with children and young people.  Successful completion of this course means you will be able to work as an independent practitioner.  The CPCAB Diploma has achieved recognition from the Open University and this course counts as 30 credits towards a foundation degree in counselling.

Units of Study

Assessment

Assessment methods will be both internal and external.

You will be required to write a 3000-3500 word structured case review, which will be externally assessed.

Complete 60 hours minimum of one-to-one formally contracted counselling as a practitioner, working with children and young people exercising autonomy in your role as counsellor and carry the responsibility for assessment.  This could be as a senior practitioner in an agency/organisation or as a private practitioner working for an external organisation.

You will be required to complete 20 hours of personal therapy.

You will be expected to build a portfolio.  The three assessment methods used throughout the training are Review of Documents, Tutor Observation, Testimony and meeting course criteria.

You will also be expected to include a 15 minute transcript and commentary.

Entry Requirement

Minimum age of entry 22 years.

Hold a CPCAB Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or Recognised Prior Learning (RPL).

You must have completed 40 hours of personal therapy.

You will be asked to attend an interview where your readiness to progress to Independent Practitioner status will be discussed.

You will need to provide two references from your most recent tutor and clinical supervisor.

This is a Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) course, which is accredited by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) into the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Qualification number 500/8386/7.

Progression Route
